Nampeyo canteen, c. 1910's

SOLD

This Nampeyo canteen is 3" x 5.5", c. 1910's, excellent condition.

Nampeyo's great granddaughter, Dextra Quotskuyva, tells us the canteens are the most difficult to make. This is a typical Nampeyo canteen, bearing the groved handles and tilted neck.

There are curved elements below the upper panel. The one on the left is an abstracted, avian figure with Sikyatki derrivations. Dextra also tells us the element on the left represents a prayer.

The white on the neck is the inside of the neck showing through the tilted portion. It is not a flaw.

"When I first began to paint, I used to go to the ancient village and pick up pieces of pottery and copy the designs. That is how I learned to paint. But now I just close my eyes and see designs and I paint them."
