Nampeyo Moth jar

SOLD

This piece is 5" x 9.5", native clay and paints, figural, excellent condition, no repairs, c. 1910.

This polychrome vessel is painted with moth images based on ancient Sikyatki designs by Nampeyo, the renowned Hopi potter. The distinctive shape of this jar with its walls bending gently inward from the rim was a form Nampeyo chose for her vessels with moth motifs. (Marti Struever)

"When I first began to paint, I used to go to the ancient village and pick up pieces of pottery and copy the designs. That is how I learned to paint. But now I just close my eyes and see designs and I paint them." Nampeyo c. 1920's
