Nampeyo bowl, c. 1910

Nampeyo bowl, c. 1910

Hopi bowl, 5.5" x 14", c. 1910, very good condition (minor abrasions), attributed to Legendary Master Potter Nampeyo.

The Smithsonian is known for having bought entire firings of Nampeyo pottery. There are several historic photographs of her with entire firings. Usually we see 3-4 large pieces, several medium size pieces and a few small ones. The large pieces are typically very expensive.

This bowl features the Polik Mana or "Butterfly Mother" katsina mask and Nampeyo's characteristic extra coil of clay on the inner rim. The katsina mask is particularly well drawn. This same image appears on a spectacular Nampeyo olla that sold at Bonhams & Butterfields for $380,000.

I never thought I'd be able to afford a larger piece but this one came along in August and I couldn't say "no." The piece has been on display in the shop but I kept if off the web because I wanted to enjoy it a while. It would be a spectacular addition to any art collection.

There is a stand included in the price.

"When I first began to paint, I used to go to the ancient village and pick up pieces of pottery and copy the designs. That is how I learned to paint. But now I just close my eyes and see designs and I paint them." Nampeyo c. 1920's
Price: $11,500.00
