Red Mesa, c 1930

Red Mesa, c 1930

Price: $3,500.00

This Navajo rug measures 51" x 71", hand-spun yarn, natural white, tan, brown, some black, all other colors are hand-dyed, c. 1930 from the Red Mesa region of Arizona, excellent condition, artist unknown.

The image of the rug is presented horizontally so the Classic serape derivation is more apparent. The Classic Pueblo/Navajo wearing blanket features 5 vertical bands, 2 come around the front, 2 go down the sides, one goes down the back. This is meant to beautify the human body.

Notice how the weaver used the white border in some of the diamonds to designate the 5 bands, thus the Classic serape analogy.
