Pueblo blanket, c. 1870's

Pueblo blanket, c. 1870's

This Pueblo wearing blanket measures 44" x 74", natural hand-spun yarn, indigo dyed blue, the brown and white are natural, c. 1870's, excellent condition, artist unknown.

This blanket was common to the Pueblo, Navajo and Spanish people. It was generally "day to day" wear as opposed to the more ornamental status textiles. The five band lay-out compliments the human body with bands on the sides, the front and one down the back.

There are at least 4 characteristics that distinguish this as Pueblo. The warped fringes are the most obvious as is the lack of any "lazy lines" that are a Navajo trait. The corner treatment is Pueblo and finally the wrapped sides are different than the Navajo looping selvage.

Thus we have an aboriginal, ethnographic, 19th century wearing blanket. A rare and wonderful thing!
Price: $5,200.00
