Nampeyo redware, c. 1900

SOLD

This Hopi canteen measures 2" x 4", native clay and paints, excellent condition, made by Legendary Master Potter Nampeyo of Hopi, c. 1900-1905.

Nampeyo is one of 3 legendary Native potters. Maria Martinez, the most famous, and Margaret Tafoya are the other two. Nampeyo's dates are 1858-1942. Consider the whole body of work of the three artists and very good argument can be made that Nampeyo displayed the widest creative range.

This canteen is an example of her redware that is
typically attributed to the dates 1900-1905. The canteens are particularly hard to make; this a sweet, small example. The stand is included with the piece.
