Classic Navajo Blanket

SOLD

This is a Late Classic Navajo serape. The dimensions are 50" x 77", native yarn, indigo blue, analine red and orange, excellent condition, artist unknown, c. 1870's.

Striped wearing blankets were "day to day" wear for Navajos. The more strongly ornamental blankets get all the attention and glory and it is well deserved. However, the striped blankets were what The People wore daily and typically wore out.

This piece has an appealing brown background. Most of the striped blankets have a white background. This piece also shows wear in the shoulder positions. This is ethnographic wear is much more a badge of honor and authenticity than "wear."
