Nampeyo bowl, c. 1900

SOLD

Hopi bowl, c. 1900, 3" x 8.5", made by Legendary Master Potter Nampeyo (1858-1942), very good condition, minor damage to lower rectangle, could easily be repaired.

This is a piece of redware bears several signature of Nampeyo. This bowl has the extra coil of clay on the inside of the rim she frequently employs. It also has the characteristic 4 pairs of 2 "raindrops" on the top of the rim. The "wings" that appear on either side of the Kiva elements in the middle represent "prayers." Nampeyo's granddaughter, the master potter Dextra Quotskuyvya, told us these elements represent prayers. Nampeyo uses them frequently. The mature quality of the designs and the masterful forming of the bowl lead us to attribute this piece to Nampeyo.

Nampeyo's redware was limited to the first years of the 20th century and appears rarely. The stand is included in the price of the piece.

"When I first began to paint, I used to go to the ancient village and pick up pieces of pottery and copy the designs. That is how I learned to paint. But now I just close my eyes and see designs and I paint them." Nampeyo c. 1920's
