Nampeyo, Seed jar, c. 1910
This Hopi seed jar measures 5.75" x 11", native clay and paints, excellent condition, c. 1910, attributed to Nampeyo of Hano.
Nampeyo ranks among the legendary Native potters with Maria Martinez and Margaret Tafoya. Her body of work displays the greatest creative range. This is an excellent example of her skill in forming the vessels and painting them. The avian imagery in this jar is Sityatki revival which she spearheaded.
This jar could display flat on a surface or on a stand at a 20 degree angle. This would better present the abstracted birds surrounding the jar.
"When I first began to paint, I used to go to the ancient village and pick up pieces of pottery and copy the designs. That is how I learned to paint. But now I just close my eyes and see designs and I paint them." Nampeyo c. 1920's
