c. 1890 Acoma Olla

SOLD
This Acoma olla measures 11" x 12.5", native clay and paints, very good condition, c. 1890, artist unknown.

The angle of the shoulder and the overall artistic aesthetic dates this olla to c. 1890. This was a high-point in Acoma pottery and this jar is a good example of the excellent artistry of the day. It features 4 panels with Kiva terracing. The spaces between them are filled with masterful hatching and a bit of cross-hatching. Given that most designs are derivative of ceremonial designs, it is safe to assume the cross-hatching was meant to face east.

One charming feature of Acoma pottery is that the artist will find an ancient chard, grind it down and incorporate this bit of history into the vessel.
