This Navajo rug measures 36" x 67", hand-spun yarn, hand-dyed red and most of the black, all other colors are natural, excellent condition, c. 1920's, from the Crystal region of New Mexico, artist unknown.

J. B. Moore orientalized the Navajo rug and published the first catalogs of these new designs. Thus, he changed the course of Navajo woven art. The published designs became the templates for this new aesthetic territory from which innovative weaving artists would create the masterpieces to come.

This rug borrows from two J.B. Moore Plates. The border is a variation on that of Plate XXV. The body of the rug is a variation on Plate XXX.
