Margaret Tafoya, Avanyu

This Santa Clara olla measures 11" x 18", native clay, excellent condition, by Master Potter Margaret Tafoya.

Margaret's work belongs with the legendary Native potters Maria Martinez and Nampeyo of Hano. Her ceramics possess a simple elegance and this is an excellent example.

Avanyu is an ancient Pueblo water deity portrayed in countless Pueblo wares. Margaret and Maria seem to be among the first to popularize it. The tongue and tail always overlap, as shown here.

The size, expert shaping of the jar and precision of the carving render this a captivating piece of ceramic art.
