Hopi Polacca, c. 1880's

Hopi Polacca, c. 1880's

SOLD

This Hopi serving bowl measures 3.75" x 9.75", native clay and paints, excellent condition, artist unknown, c. 1880's.

This is a truly unique piece of Native art. The first noteworthy feature is the white Polacca slip. This slip is specific to the Polacca village in Hopi. It leaves a signature, finely crackled surface that is unmistakable. This piece bears that slip. The Polacca era ends about 1890, thus the date, c. 1880's unless this was the last Polacca made in 1890!

Next, the imagery is directly from Zuni and infers the close relationship between the Hopi and Zuni. There are countless examples of Zuni pottery with the abstracted avian beak and eye with the addition of the abstracted Kiva ladder.

Finally, it is a serving bowl. Thus it is an ethnographic piece, made for home use in Hopi (or Zuni). This is an endearing feature because it makes no attempt to please a non-Native sensibility. It is by the People for the People and it was made before the great influx of Anglos in the 1890's.
