Bessie Manygoats
SOLD
The Master Weavers p. 123
Bessie Star Center Storm, 53" x 77", c. 1930's
This is the only design I have seen Bessie Manygoats repeat. I take that as an endorsement, not boredom. This is the legendary master at her best. This rug from the 30's has a design esthetic we don't see in Bessie's work for 10 or 15 more years. The lighter field is more common in the 40's and 50's. Gratefully it has a spirit-line, otherwise I'd be tempted to call it flawless. Her execution is laser-like.
My favorite feature in the rug is to be found in the top/bottom center of the dark inner panel. There is a repeated image that plays with figural/abstract presentations. Find it? Incredibly cool!
