Nampeyo Bowl, c. 1905

SOLD

This Nampeyo bowl was made c. 1905; the dimensions are 2.5" x 7.5".

The bowl is in excellent overall condition with no repairs of restoration.

While unsigned, the bowl is attributed to the great Hopi potter Nampeyo. The bowl's form and molding conform to other bowls made by Nampeyo. It has the extra added rim coil of clay distinctive to her work. Most importantly, the drawing of the design in the center closely matches Nampeyo's known work: the checkerboard and the bird beaks with rounded eyes and lashes on the top of the design are two well known Nampeyo elements.

The complexity and unity of the design featuring feather and bird elements are typical of Nampeyo's work. Overall, the design is well executed in the prehistoric Sikyatki style, but with Nampeyo's added flourishes. The bowl would be a fine piece to add to any collection of Pueblo pottery or modern art for that matter.

"When I first began to paint, I used to go to the ancient village and pick up pieces of pottery and copy the designs. That is how I learned to paint. But now I just close my eyes and see designs and I paint them." Nampeyo c. 1920's
