Hopi, c. 1895

Hopi, c. 1895

SOLD

This Hopi seed jar measures 4.3" x 6.5", native clay and paints, excellent condition, c. 1895, made by Nampeyo.

Nampeyo is one of the three legendary Native potters. The other two are Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo and Margaret Tafoya of Santa Clara Pueblo. This piece is part of her earlier work which is highly prized and rare. Unlike most everything seen by Nampeyo this has a negative field. The white slip of the vessel comprises the avian figures and the painted black becomes the background.

The negative field and the simple repetitive design of two alternating birds constitute a truly unique work of art from one of the most creative Native artists.
