Nampeyo Seed Jar

This Hopi seed jar measures 4" x 6.5", native clay and paints, polychrome, excellent condition, c. 1895-1900, made by Nampeyo.
This seed jar was made by the Legendary Native Potter, Nampeyo of the Hopi tribe. She shares the Legendary status with Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo and Margaret Tafoya of Santa Clara Pueblo. Nampeyo's body of work from the 19th century is highly prized and much of it was made before she became famous and her work was in great demand from Fred Harvey, Lorenzo Hubble and others.
This jar is exquisitely shaped with the dramatic neck and flat shoulders. There are two moths, one on either side, with abstract kiva steps on the opposing sides.
