Nampeyo bowl, c. 1905

SOLD

This is Hopi bowl measures 3.25" x 10.5", native clay and paints, c. 1905, by the legendary Hopi potter Nampeyo, excellent condition, no repairs.

Nampeyo is one of the three legendary Native potters. Maria Martinez, the most famous, Margaret Tafoya of Santa Clara Pueblo are the other two potters in Nampeyo's class.

This piece is more minimally drawn than many of the bowls she painted in this time period. It bears her signature "Sikyatki revival" imagery with the abstracted avian images. This bowl features the extra coil of clay on the inner lip.

"When I first began to paint, I used to go to the ancient village and pick up pieces of pottery and copy the designs. That is how I learned to paint. But now I just close my eyes and see designs and I paint them." Nampeyo c. 1920's
