c. 1920 Double saddle

SOLD

This is a Navajo double saddle blanket. The dimensions are 35" x 62", native, handspun yarn, analine dyed red, "like new" condition, artist unknown, c. 1920.

The pristine condition of this piece hides it's age. The art and craft reveal the time it was woven. The most obvious clue are the "sew lines." These disappear in the 1920's after 1,000 year old Pueblo loom receives it's biggest innovation. There are 2 "sew lines." The next clue is the intentional flaw. The "spirit line" sneaks in during the 1930's (with a few previews!)but this weaving has a single design flaw. Can you find it?

Lastly the basic design of the saddle blanket is two Waterbugs stacked on top of each other. These are derived from J.B. Moore's Crystal Catalog. In the 1920's these were still familiar to many weaver, even though Moore had fled New Mexico in 1913, one jump ahead of the USPS!
