Tree of Life, c. 1930

Tree of Life, c. 1930

SOLD

This Navajo rug is 43" x 80", excellent condition, c. 1930, weaver unknown.

This rug depicts the Navajo "Tree of Life." Corn is a primary source of life, thus the corn plant is the "tree of life." The leaves on the top of the plant resemble a Jewish minorah, we have seen this before. Eclectic as the Navajo are, the weaver may have seen this image and liked it enough to use it.

The "Tree of Life" rugs are fairly hard to find, especially one as old and nice as this. The rug is not misshapen, it's just the angle of the photograph. See if you can find her "spirit line." Hint: In the old days it was an intentional design "flaw."

Tough enough for the floor, beautiful enough for the wall.
