Teec Nos Pos rug, c. 1910, 48" x 74", very good condition. Handspun natural and dyed yarns, very smooth surface.
This is a rare and wonderful Navajo rug to my eye. It has a 3 column layout featuring waterbugs, Spider Woman crosses, numerous diamonds and beading that was used in striped wearing robes.
The wonder of this rug is greatly more in the sum of it's parts than the parts themselves. This is a VERY EARLY regional rug. It's a Teec and the Teec Nos Pos Trading Post was opened in 1905, safe to say it is no earlier than 1905 but the relationship of the design elements to each other and the way they are drawn leave it looking like it could be...African, Central American ANY aboriginal group. THAT'S is beauty, timeless aboriginal elegance in an early Navajo rug.
The colors were difficult to get right on the screen. It looks fantastic in person and the feel of the wool is true to the sweet Merino wool that was available at the end of the 19th century, early 20th.
