Zuni Pueblo, c. 1890

SOLD

This is a Zuni Chili bowl, c. 1890, 3.5" x 8", very good conditon, one rim repair done with pine pitch, most likely repaired in early 20th century.

This is a masterpiece of a chili bowl. The artistry from Zuni Pueblo really shines in this simple, utilitarian bowl. The beauty of this specific piece probably sent it to market instead of being used in the home but there were pieces used in the home at this time that were as well done.

Here is a wonderful example of the convergence of necessity to contain foods, highly refined esthetic sensibility and a thoroughly grounded sense of identity. These people knew who they were, had great pride in it and were able to express it in simple, day to day items.
